SIOUX FALLS—Investigators say two convicted kidnappers accused of killing a South Dakota prison guard during a failed escape attempt used the guard’s uniform to sneak past one of two security gates before they were caught. Department of Criminal Investigation Special Agent Jason Piercy says in an affidavit that 48-year-old inmates Eric Robert and Rodney Berget assaulted guard Ronald Johnson, wrapped his head in shrink wrap and left him to die while they tried to escape. Piercy says Robert donned Johnson’s uniform and Berget hid inside a cardboard box. They say Robert wheeled Berget past the first security gate on an industrial cart before a suspicious guard confronted them. Berget and Robert made initial appearances Wednesday in state court in Sioux Falls and were charged with first degree murder and felony murder.
