DR. GAUSMAN EXPECTS MINIMAL LAYOFFS, IF ANY

SIOUX CITY—THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE SIOUX CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT IS HOPING FOR THE BEST, BUT PREPARING FOR THE WORST WHEN IT COMES TO EDUCATIONAL FUNDING FROM THE STATE.

DR. PAUL GAUSMAN IS IN FAVOR OF THE DEMOCRATS’ PROPOSAL OF A TWO-PERCENT INCREASE IN GENERAL STATE AID FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

REPUBLICANS SAY THE STATE IS IN BAD SHAPE AND CANNOT AFFORD AN INCREASE.

GAUSMAN SAYS THE DISTRICT IS REQUIRED TO CERTIFY THEIR BUDGET BY APRIL 15TH, SO THEY ARE ACTING AS IF THERE WILL BE A ZERO INCREASE IN STATE AID.

HE SAYS ANOTHER BILL REGARDING THE PROPERTY TAX EQUITY RELIEF FUND IS ALSO VITAL TO SIOUX CITY TAXES AND EDUCATION.

GAUSMAN SAYS THE DISTRICT IS NEGOTIATING WITH THE LOCAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, WHO DO NOT WANT TO SETTLE WITH THE DISTRICT UNTIL THEY KNOW HOW MUCH REVENUE IS AVAILABLE.

GAUSMAN SAYS THEY WILL DO WHAT THEY CAN TO RETAIN STAFF MEMBERS AND KEEP PROPERTY TAXES AS LOW AS POSSIBLE.
