FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO BLAZE AT JOHN MORRELL

SIOUX CITY—SIOUX CITY FIRE RESCUE RESPONDED TUESDAY MORNING TO A BLAZE IN THE OLD JOHN MORRELL BUILDING. PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER JOE RODRIGUEZ SAYS UPON ARRIVAL AT 1200 BLUFF ROAD, FIREFIGHTERS REPORTED SMOKE VISIBLE FROM THE BASEMENT OF THE PLANT. ON-SITE WORKERS DIRECTED FIREFIGHTERS TO THE AREA INVOLVED AND THE FIRE WAS QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED. THE STRUCTURE SUSTAINED NO FIRE DAMAGE AND ALL WORKERS WERE EVACUATED WITH NO INJURIES. THE DEPARTMENT HAD SEVEN APPARATUS AND 18 FIREFIGHTERS AT THE SCENE. THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE WAS DETERMINED TO BE A WORKER WITH A CUTTING TORCH IGNITING ANIMAL FAT THAT WAS CONTAINED IN A METAL VAT.
