SIOUXLAND—The Iowa Board of Regents has approved a 5 percent increase in tuition at the state’s three public universities to offset dwindling state aid. Under the plan approved Wednesday, base in-state tuition for undergraduates would go up $308 at the University of Iowa and $306 at Iowa State University and the University of Northern Iowa for the academic year beginning in fall 2011. Presidents of the three universities say the increases are critical to maintaining the quality of education after several years of state budget cuts. The plan also calls for double-digit increases in tuition for students enrolled in some programs that university officials say are more costly to offer.
