SIOUX CITY—Woodbury County supervisors have rejected a proposal to ban guns from county-owned buildings. The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted against the proposal by County Attorney P.J. Jennings. In order to protect employees, Jennings proposed a resolution that would not only ban guns from the courtrooms as they are now, but from all county property. Dozens of people showed up at Tuesday’s meeting to protest the plan. Jenning’s proposal came in the wake of Iowa’s new gun law, which went into effect on Jan. 1. It limits the discretion local sheriffs previously had in denying permits without explanation. Now, sheriffs can only deny applications for specific reasons, such as a prior criminal record or drug and alcohol addiction, and must provide a written explanation.
