LINCOLN—Gov. Dave Heineman has named a northeast Nebraska farmer and retired truck driver to fill a vacant seat in the state Legislature. Dave Bloomfield of Hoskins will serve as the state senator representing legislative District 17. He replaces Sen. Bob Giese of South Sioux City, who resigned after being elected last month as Dakota County treasurer. The district includes Dakota, Dixon and Wayne counties. Heineman selected Bloomfield from a field of eight. Bloomfield was sworn in Thursday afternoon by Secretary of State John Gale. The 64-year-old Bloomfield was raised in Dakota County and graduated from South Sioux City High School. He later served in the U.S. Army and is a Vietnam veteran. He is also chairman of the Wayne County Republican Party, a position he plans to resign.
