CAUSE OF GLEN OAKS FIRE DETERMINED

SIOUX CITY—THE CAUSE OF LAST WEEK’S FIRE AT GLEN OAKS APARTMENTS IN SIOUX CITY HAS BEEN DETERMINED.

SIOUX CITY FIRE RESCUE RESPONDED TO A STRUCTURE FIRE THURSDAY NIGHT AT 3738 GLEN OAKS BOULEVARD.

UPON ARRIVAL, FIREFIGHTERS REPORTED FLAMES AND SMOKE VISIBLE FROM THE 2ND AND 3RD FLOOR EXTERIOR OF THE 24 UNIT APARTMENT BUILDING.

THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED TO HALF OF THE BUILDING AFFECTING 12 UNITS.

9 OF THE 12 UNITS WERE OCCUPIED, AND ALL OCCUPANTS, BESIDES THREE CATS WHO DIED, WERE ABLE TO EXIT SAFELY.

THE STRUCTURE SUSTAINED SEVERE FIRE DAMAGE TO THE WEST END OF THE COMPLEX AND HAS BEEN RED TAGGED.

SIOUX CITY DEPUTY FIRE MARSHAL TROY HEDLUND HAS DETERMINED THAT IMPROPERLY DISCARDED SMOKING MATERIALS ON THE 3RD FLOOR DECK IGNITED COMBUSTIBLES AND SPREAD TO THE STRUCTURE.
