DES MOINES—An elderly woman is the first reported West Nile virus death in Iowa since 2008. The Iowa Department of Public Health on Wednesday reported the woman was from central Iowa and was older than age 81. The department says she died within the last month. The department says she is the first person in the state to die from the virus since 2008, when one person died from West Nile in Iowa. Department deputy epidemiologist Dr. Ann Garvey says the woman’s death is a reminder for Iowans to protect themselves against West Nile even though the weather is getting cooler. Garvey says it isn’t unusual to see West Nile virus activity in the late fall. Public health experts say the best way to prevent West Nile virus is to stop mosquitoes from breeding and biting.
