SIOUXLAND—Health officials say an elderly Siouxland woman has died from West Nile virus, giving Nebraska its first death from the disease since 2008. The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services said Monday that an 80-year-old woman from northeast Nebraska had died from West Nile. HHS spokeswoman Leah Bucco-White refused to say what county the woman was from to protect her privacy. The death was investigated by the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department, which serves Cedar, Dixon, Thurston and Wayne counties. In 2010, there have been 19 confirmed cases of West Nile in 12 Nebraska counties. West Nile is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird.
