CITY HOPES TO TAKE OVER WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

SIOUX CITY—IT WAS ANNOUNCED WEDNESDAY MORNING AT THE CITY MANAGER’S PRESS CONFERENCE THAT CITY STAFF WILL APPROACH THE COUNCIL MONDAY WITH A PROPOSAL TO TAKE OVER THE OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE CITY’S WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT. THIS WOULD INVOLVE TERMINATING THE PRESENT CONTRACT WITH AMERICAN WATER SERVICES THAT HAS PERFORMED THE RESPONSIBILITIES SINCE 2004. THE TRANSITION WOULD BE ACCOMPLISHED UNDER THE CONVENIENCE CLAUSE OF THE EXISTING CONTRACT.

IN MAKING THE ANNOUNCEMENT, CITY MANAGER PAUL ECKERT SAID THE DECIDING FACTORS TO AFFECT THE CHANGE WERE TO BETTER SERVE RESIDENTS AND SAVE MONEY.

ECKERT SAYS INITIAL COST SAVINGS WILL AMOUNT TO MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS ANNUALLY.
