HEINEMAN UNDERSTANDS FREMONT FRUSTRATION

SIOUXLAND—Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman says he understands why Fremont voters approved a ban on hiring and renting housing to illegal immigrants. Heineman says, “I understand their frustration and anger.” Heineman stayed quiet before the vote in June, saying the governor shouldn’t meddle in local affairs. Heineman lived in Fremont from 1982 until becoming governor in 2005. The Fremont City Council is set to vote Tuesday on whether to approve election officials’ certification of the measure. If the council approves the certification, the law could go into effect this summer _ but only if it survives a promised legal challenge by the American Civil Liberties Union.
